How much does it cost?

The annual subscription is designed for frequent users, Milton Keynes residents and people commuting to MK. Pay as you ride is designed for occasional users.

You need to register before you can hire a bike. When you register, £1 will be debited from your card to check it’s valid. Don’t worry, this will be added to the account to pay for the first £1 of fares or subscription fee.

The annual subscription is designed for frequent users.

Please note, you may not be charged for your ride immediately. You card may be charged 24-48 hours after using the bike.

Customer Card

When you register, you can choose to receive a customer card for a one off cost of £2, which will be charged to the card registered to your nextbike account.

You do not need to have a customer card to hire a bike, you can use the app, the bike’s computer or call the nextbike team 24/7 to hire a bike.

What kind of rider are you?

Below are some examples of typical Santander Cycles MK journeys and what they would cost.

Andy’s journey

Andy hires a bike from outside the Milton Keynes railway station and cycles for 25 minutes before he returns the bike to a docking station near his workplace in the Hub. Andy doesn’t have an annual subscription and has hired the bike for 25 minutes in total. The cost of Andy’s journey is therefore £1.

If Andy did have an annual subscription (costing £60 per year) this journey would have been free. In fact, Andy could make as many separate journeys as he wanted that day, and as long as they were less than 30 minutes in duration, they would all be free of charge.

Beth’s journey

Beth hires a bike from outside her home in Shenley Lodge on a weekend and cycles for 1hr 20mins before returning the bike to the same Santander Cycles MK docking station. Beth hasn’t paid for an annual subscription and has hired the bike for 80 minutes in total. The cost of Beth’s journey is £3.

If Beth had an annual subscription (costing £60 per year) this journey would have cost £1.

Saleem’s journey

Saleem hires a bike from a Santander Cycles MK docking station outside his workplace and cycles for 20 minutes to the shopping centre. He locks the bike to a public bike rack for 15 minutes while he picks up some lunch, safe in the knowledge that it remains hired by him until he returns it to an official Santander Cycles MK docking station. He then cycles back to his workplace, which takes him 20 minutes, and returns the bike to the original docking station. As Saleem has hired the bike for 55 minutes in total, the cost of his journey is £2.

If Saleem had an annual subscription (costing £60 per year) this journey would have cost £0.50.

Katerina’s journey

Katerina hires a bike to cycle for 30 minutes to her gym class. She parks the bike outside for 90 minutes while she is in the gym. Katerina then cycles to a friend’s house for the afternoon, a journey that takes her 30 minutes, and parks the bike at her friend’s house for four hours. After this, Katerina cycles back home, a journey that takes her 20 minutes, and returns the bike to a Santander Cycles MK docking station nearby. As Katerina has hired the bike for 6 hours 50 minutes in total, the cost of her hire is £10.

As £10 is the maximum charge for a 24-hour period, Katerina could have continued using the bike to get around, so long as she returned the bike to an official Santander Cycles MK docking station within 24 hours of taking it out, and it would still have only cost her £10.

If Katerina had an annual subscription (costing £60 per year) it would have cost £5.
